I really thank him for being so honest because i used to use his book with genki and just focusing on genki really made my japanese studies go much smoother. I thought it was weird at first, but he is right, Genki teaches its own Kanjis and even though there's no fancy mnemnonics, there is context (the kanji are introduced progressively in each lesson in a very natural fashion, there are readings parts, specific exercices for the kanjis and so on.) and having context seems to be far superior to learning on a list with just a few random words there and there. I know, a lot of people recommend them, but it's actually Andrew Conning, aka the author of KLC (one of the best Kanji learning books) who said to me to not use any kanji specific book in the beginning and build a strong grammar/vocab base first. However, this is probably going to be controversial, but i would recommend against using any kanji book before maybe the intermediate or advanced phase.
